Wengen forms part of the Jungfrau Top Ski Region that includes the Kleine Scheidegg – Mannlichen area (110km of piste) all of which is accessible by train or cable car from the village; there are also the pistes of the Murren – Schilthorn area (53km of piste) located across the Lauterbrunnen valley to consider, not to mention the Grindelwald – First area (50km of piste) located above Grindelwald.
The International Lauberhorn race, held in January each year, is the highlight of the winter ski calendar when the world’s best come to Wengen to tackle the demanding course. Cheer on your favourite skier as you tuck into an open-air fondue on the side of the mountain.
For the younger visitor, there is an English-speaking kindergarten in the village and also at the top of the Mannlichen cable car ready to provide fun and care for the younger members of the family (3 months – 7yrs). There are a total of 6 nursery areas in the ski area for beginner skiers who are well catered for. For first time skiers or those wishing to improve on their technique, ski instruction is available by the local ski school and private school that have English speaking instructors. For intermediates, long, wide, open runs stretch out above the tree line and offer scenic runs down to Grindelwald. Experts can follow the route of the famous World Cup race from the top of the Lauberhorn run down to Innerwengen.
As a predominantly family resort, après-ski activities in Wengen are more of a low key affair compared to some of the more lively Swiss resorts. Once the lifts close, skiers head to the area around the train station and the main street which provide a choice of cafe’s and lively bars often with live music.
Other winter activities include, curling, ice skating, snow shoeing, guided walks and sledging. Although there is no public indoor swimming pool in Wengen, several of the hotels offer day passes to their pool and spa facilities.
